Sedimentology is the study of the physical and chemical characteristics
of sediments and the processes that lead to their deposition.

Sedimentological techniques can therefore provide information about the past depositional environment at a site, as well as providing information about possible human influence on sedimentation and the archaeological potential of sedimentary units.

ARCA’s purpose-built laboratories house a range of up-to-date equipment capable of carrying out a full suite of sedimentological techniques. These can include standard techniques such as the determination of sediment bulk density, organic carbon content and peat humification, as well as more advanced techniques such as volume and mass-specific magntetic susceptibility.
