Sustainability
ARCA has a responsibility to their employees and the local community to operate in a sustainable manner within a safe environment. In the provision of our services sustainability is embedded into our business process such that our legal and ethical duties are maintained and enhanced through the use of appropriate training and supervision. ARCA is fortunate in that our parent organisation, the University of Winchester, has credentials in the field of sustainability and waste management that are second to none. The UN’s "Transforming Our World: The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development" is the flagship agenda to which the University aspires. Some of the University’s notable achievements to date are: British Quality Foundation Sustainable Future Award 2016 and Social Enterprise Gold Mark 2017 (for more details please see the University's Sustainability and Social Justice webpages).
ARCA naturally falls under the ‘green umbrella’ of the University and as an organisation that deals in the Earth Sciences is acutely aware of the environmental effects of its working practices. To mitigate these all waste disposal, for example, plastic drilling core sleeves and sediment – a single 10m borehole can produce up to 100kg of material – is recycled by the University’s waste contractor which operates a zero landfill policy. Our laboratory runs off renewable energy and brand new low energy fume cupboards have recently been installed. Electronic record keeping is encouraged not only for its interactive utility but also to avoid paper use.
