Paul is the ARCA Project Manager for 'Assessments,
Research and Reports'. He graduated from Saint David's University
College, Lampeter in 1994 with a BA (Hons) in Archaeology. In
1999, after working on a number of research excavations, he
completed his MA in European Archaeology and Human Osteology
at the University of Southampton. He then travelled to Ireland

Having gained valuable experience
of the demands of developer-led archaeology he then returned
to the UK where he spent a year and a half working for the
Museum of London Archaeology Service on a series of large
and complex urban excavations, and assisting in post-excavation
analysis. From there he moved to the Cambridge Archaeology
Unit where he spent a further year working on rural and urban
sites, and in the production of desk-based assessments, before
moving to the University of Southampton to start his PhD in
2002.
PhD Research
His thesis was a quantitative and
qualitative analysis of contemporary commercial archaeology
in Britain, and during his PhD he continued to work part-time
for a number of commercial units, including Oxford Archaeology,
Wessex Archaeology and Southampton Archaeology, from which
he gained further valuable experience of research and report
writing.
Academia
Paul completed his thesis in 2007
and started work at the University of Winchester in 2008,
where he teaches applied archaeological techniques, project
management and desk-based assessments. Paul researches fieldwork
methodology, the history of archaeology, archaeological pedagogies
and contemporary commercial archaeology, and is Site Director
of a research/training excavation in the former Soviet Republic
of Georgia.
