Geoarchaeological Site Visits

Geoarcheological Site Visit MontageFor an archaeological project to truly benefit from geoarchaeological advice it is very important that a visit be made by a geoarchaeologist. Only in the field are the extensive stratigraphic exposures, necessary to infer formation and modification processes, visible. Also, it is only in the field that a geoarchaeologist can enter into a dialogue with the archaeologists actually excavating/investigating a site.

Outcomes
An ARCA geoarchaeologist visiting a site will:

  • discuss with site staff the archaeological problems that can be resolved by using geoarchaeological approaches;
  • describe relevant site stratigraphy using standard geological terminology and interpret that stratigraphy in terms of its genesis and subsequent modification;
  • advise on/undertake sampling for laboratory geoarchaeological and bioarchaeological analyses and chronometric dating (14C, optically stimulated luminescence etc.);
  • produce a short interim written report for use by site staff and managers, following the visit.

ARCA geoarchaeologists carry out site visits as part of test (evaluations) or full excavations.
